About Sabzevar:

Sabzevar is a city in the west of Khorasan Razavi province, northeast of Iran, whose former name is Bayhaq. Sabzevar is one of the most important population, academic, cultural, Islamic and historical centers of Northeast Iran and has been considered as one of the symbols of Iranian history and science.

After the Mongol invasion of Khwarezmshah, due to the bravery of the devoted defenders known as Sarbedaran , it was also known as Sarbedaran for some time.

After the Shiite government of Al-Buyeh, the next Shiite government in Iran was established by the Sarbedaran who ruled parts of the country for a long time and the capital of this government was Sabzevar. Sabzevar is one of the most important population, academic, cultural, Islamic and historical centers of Northeast Iran and has been considered as one of the symbols of Iranian history and science. The scientific and academic centers as well as the seminaries of this city have a long history. This city has been the origin of great thinkers in different historical periods and has introduced great poets to the world of science and literature, including Ibn Yamin Freyumdi and Hamid Sabzevari.

The old name of Sabzevar is Beyhaq. Before Islam, Beyhaq was called “Biheh” or “Biheen” or “Beyg” (meaning a good place or the best area in this region of eastern Iran in the Sassanid era). Biha, located between Neyshabur in the east and Qoms in the west, is located on the Silk Road (from China to the Mediterranean) and was one of the centers of pre-Islamic Iranian civilization, especially in the Parthian and Sassanid eras, which later Called Sabzevar.

The distance of Sabzevar city through road 44 with Mashhad in the east is 230 km and with Tehran in the west is 660 km. Sabzevar city located in the west of Khorasan Razavi province, based on the latest divisions of the country, has two parts called Markazi and Rudab.

The area of this city is 31 square kilometers.

It is stated in the history of Beyhaq: And Sabzevar grew into a city with all kinds of fruit trees and shade, so the people wrote it as Sabzvar And they said that Sabzevar is like a paradise under which rivers flow.

Haj Mollahadi

Haj Mollahadi Sabzevari is a scientist of Islamic sciences, poet and philosopher of the Qajar period who is known in his poems by the pseudonym of secrets. His tomb was built one year after his death in 1251 AH by Mirza Yusuf Mostofi al-Mamalik in the middle of a courtyard on the south side of Kargar Square in Sabzevar. Among the materials used in the construction of the tomb of Haj Mollahadi Sabzevari, we can mention brick, which stands out with its eye-catching tile decorations and a beautiful turquoise dome among the trees and the green space of the area. The interior of the tomb of Haj Mollahadi Sabzevari with a cruciform design consists of a tomb room and four porches around it. The tomb used to have a wooden shrine, but now there is no trace of it. This monument was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran in 1976.

Pamenar Mosque “The oldest mosque in Khorasan”

This religious building is the oldest mosque in Sabzevar, which is located on the south side of Bayhaq Street. The current building of the mosque with an area of ​​approximately 350 square meters consists of a columned nave and a courtyard on the south side, which is an annex to this mosque. The fame of this building is due to the existence of a minaret near the porch with a height of more than 20 meters. The stem of this minaret is adorned with decorations and wise inscriptions that can be seen prominently in the lower part.

According to the texts of this mosque, it was rebuilt in 317 AH by the efforts of Amir Abolfazl Ziari and in 420 AH, a minaret was built for it by Khajeh Amirk Dabir. Based on restorations and reconstructions in different centuries, the age of this building from the early Islamic centuries to Safavid and contemporary is estimated.

Iran is a vast country with small and large cities scattered around it, and there is a long way to go to reach each of these cities, a path that many years ago was traversed on foot and they needed a place to rest. It so happened that caravanserais or ligaments were built in different parts of Iran and on the main transportation routes. Robat Haj Faramarz Khan, a relic of the Qajar period, is located on the west side of Kargar Square in Sabzevar. This rope was built in the style of four porches in 1253 AH by Haj Faramarz Khan, Brigadier General of Sabzevari, for the rest of travelers and their livestock.

The materials used in this building include brick, wood, lime, plaster and sand, which are still standing after many years. Paintings with geometric designs and ocher color have decorated the walls of this ligament. Robat Faramarz Khan has an open courtyard around which rooms were built and behind these rooms there were places as stables and docks. The center was another name for Faramarz Khan Caravanserai, which had changed its use to the Center for the Poor for two years. At present, parts of this ligament have been turned into the anthropological museum of Sabzevar.

The courtyard of the Islami historical house in Sabzevar is one of the examples of generous and clean courtyards that have existed in the architecture of many old houses in West Khorasan region.

What attracts the most attention is the relatively large pool or lake in the middle of this yard, which, when full of water, gives a special softness and beauty to its surroundings in the hot and dry summer weather of desert cities.

The Islami House is one of the historical buildings of Sabzevar, which is of great value due to its traditional architecture in West Khorasan.

This house has recently been renovated by the city council, municipality and the city’s cultural heritage department and has been given to one of the cultural complexes of Sabzevar and has been named as Hosseinieh Honar.


In one of the side streets branching from the historical Beyhaq street of Sabzevar, Beyhaq area 18 is located.

Dialect and accent :

The language of the majority of the people of Sabzevar is Persian. The dialect of the people of Sabzevar is one of the original dialects of Khorasan and of Dari Persian origin. However, Sabzevari dialect is fundamentally different from other Khorasani dialects due to its preservation of its originality throughout history. For historical reasons, the words of Sabzevari dialect still retain their Persian originality and less words are used in it. These words are alive and sometimes date back to ancient Iran and the common dialects of that time and are still used in everyday conversation among the people.

According to the law of division of the country in 1316 during the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi, Sabzevar was the most populous city in the ninth province after Mashhad. Also in the first official census of Iran which was done in 1335 and also in 1345 and 1355 Sabzevar was the second most populous city in Khorasan province.

In the censuses of 1365, 1375 and 1385, it was in the same position until in the census of 1390, it dropped to the third place in Khorasan Razavi province (after Mashhad and Neishabour). According to the general population and housing census in 2016, Sabzevar, with a population of 243,700, is the 34th most populous city in Iran.

  • It is said that Bahman ibn Esfandiar ibn Goshtasb (Bahman al-Mulk) was a great kingdom that Bahmanabad Beyhaq had built and in his time Bahmanabad was a great city. His son was Sasan and his daughter was Homay. When Bahman’s death approached, he placed a crown on his wife’s abdomen and chose a child as crown prince. When Sasan saw that his father preferred a fetus to him, he got up, bought a few sheep and came to Beyhaq area, and descended to where Sasan is Qariz, and said that they built this karez, which is in the middle of the city, and built a castle. This place, which is the town of Sasanabad, should be written in Sabzevar today.
  • It is said that Sabzevar was built by Sasuyeh Ibn Shapur al-Molk and Shapur was the one who built Neishabour and Sasan Qariz was Saso Qariz and Sabzevar was originally Sasuyeh Abad.

Therefore, the foundation of Sabzevar can be considered around the year 300 AD, contemporary with the formation of the Sassanid dynasty or earlier.

Natural features

The Joghatai Mountains are the cause of the separation of the Joven Plain from the main plain of Sabzevar, and to the south of it is the Mish Mountain. In other words, Sabzevar is surrounded by northern and southern heights. The logical eastern and northern faces of this mountainous city have a temperate climate and in the plains with hot weather. There are only two seasonal riverbeds called Kal-shour in this area that lead the floods of Sabzevar plain to the desert salt marshes.

Pride makers :

The great Iranian historian Abolfazl Beyhaqi was also born in this city. Sabzevar University of Medical Sciences, Hakim Sabzevari University and Islamic Azad University are important universities in this city. There are currently 14 major universities and institutes of higher learning in the city. The governorate of this city is one of the special governorates of Iran.

Mahmoud Dolatabadi, Mullah Hadi Sabzevari, Mullah Hossein Vaez Kashefi, Qasem Ghani, Abolfazl Bayhaqi, Seyyed Abdolali Afghei Sabzevari, Dr. Ali Shariati are among the most famous people in Sabzevar. Sabzevar has a privileged position among the cities of Khorasan Razavi province in terms of trade and commercial position. It is also one of the richest cities in Iran in terms of the amount of balance in bank accounts and has a large number of merchants and is known as the desert port of Khorasan.
